In three recent articles on ExecutiveBiz.com, it was revealed that the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) is addressing cyber threats in the Intelligence Community in three main ways: through the SoURCE CODE program, the TrojAI initiative, and the ReSCIND program.

The SoURCE CODE program aims to equip forensic experts with new technologies that can unveil the actors behind cyber attacks. By measuring the similarities between files, experts can connect attackers to countries, groups, and individuals, and credit the attacks accordingly.

The TrojAI initiative is focused on developing a system capable of flagging Trojan attacks on artificial intelligence (AI) systems. By training an AI technology to react to specific triggers, adversaries can take control of the AI from within. By identifying and flagging these Trojan attacks, engineers can discover compromised AI systems prior to their deployment.

The ReSCIND program is focused on improving cyber defenses by administering a cyber penalty on attackers. By wasting an adversary’s time and effort, the hope is to deter attacks. The program aims to achieve this through the development of approaches that identify and model human limitations or cognitive biases related to cyber attack behavior, understand and induce changes in cyber attack behavior and success, and provide algorithms for automated adaptation of these technologies.

Overall, IARPA’s research projects are crucial for addressing cybersecurity threats and ensuring that the Intelligence Community is prepared to handle these threats.
