The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is currently dealing with a significant cyber attack from an unidentified threat actor. The breach is described as “alarming” by the RCMP, but at this time, there is no impact on RCMP operations or known threats to the safety and security of Canadians. The quick work and mitigation strategies put in place by the RCMP demonstrate the steps taken to detect and prevent such threats. The attack comes on the heels of warnings from Canada’s Communications Security Establishment about potential cyber attacks linked to the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The RCMP was recently involved in the takedown of the LockBit ransomware gang. While details of the cyber attack remain limited, the RCMP has assured the public that there are currently no known impacts on operations or safety and security partners in Canada or abroad.
