Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that a dynamic cyber security platform will be operational by May 2024 to combat the rise in cybercrime and abuse of AI and Deepfake technologies in the Indian state. The announcement came about in response to concerns aired by Mumbai Regional Congress Committee President Varsha Gaikwad about misuse of AI in cases of cybercrime targeting women and false representation of public figures. The platform will engage with banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and social media sites and will include contributions from 17 global companies.
The need to address this issue was emphasized considering the growing incidents of targeting women using AI and deepfake technologies. Videos manipulated with sophisticated technologies, often portraying public figures and regular citizens in false scenarios, have added to the urgency and importance of launching a well-structured counter-initiative. Gaikwad highlighted how such abuses of technology contribute to disinformation and can alter public opinion, adding to women’s insecurity and the overall crime rate.
The deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, asserted that their cyber security platform would incorporate banks, NBFCs, and social media sites. The program aims to tackle serious incidents like thefts from bank accounts or offensive and harmful posts on social media platforms that can incite religious intolerance. The project will involve 17 companies worldwide, indicating a global approach towards creating a robust platform capable of preventing cybercrime effectively.
Although the plan’s specifics were not detailed during the discussion, the deputy chief minister affirmed that it is set to be ready by April-May 2024. He argued that well-strategized plans are necessary for managing the rising trend of technology misuse and ensuring proper security measures are put in place to protect individuals from being victims of such crimes.
Gaikwad also pointed out the potential future issues of more advanced technology becoming more prevalent, suggesting the need for ongoing vigilance and adjustments to cyber crime countermeasures. The initiative signals a crucial stride towards protecting citizens from technology misuse while also setting an example for other regions to step up their measures against cybercrime.
