Sony has signed a deal with Marvel to produce exclusive X-Men games until 2035, according to a leaked slide from the recent Insomniac cyber security attack. The agreement specifies that Marvel cannot release or announce any X-Men games on console, PC, or streaming platforms until 2035. However, X-Men characters can still appear in multi-family Marvel games. The deal includes development and marketing spend for each X-Men game, as well as Marvel’s royalty rates and potential termination terms. Marvel’s Wolverine game is set to be released in 2026, with the first X-Men game scheduled for 2030. An extended roadmap suggests that a third X-Men game is planned for 2033.

Other companies have also obtained licenses to develop Marvel-based games. Electronic Arts announced a long-term deal with Marvel last year to create three new action-adventure games, including an Iron Man game and a Black Panther game. Skydance Media is also developing a Marvel World War 2-set narrative-driven adventure, and Dishonored studio Arkane Lyon is working on a game based on Marvel’s Blade.

The X-Men deal between Sony and Marvel coincides with Marvel’s plans to introduce the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool 3, which features Deadpool and Wolverine, is set to be the only Disney MCU movie released in 2024.
