St Vincent’s Health Australia has revealed that it has suffered a cyberattack in which an unknown amount of data was stolen from one of its systems. The attack was first detected on 19 December, but the threat actor had not taken any action since the following day. However, on 21 December, the hospital and aged care provider discovered that some data had been exfiltrated. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing and St Vincent’s is working to determine exactly what data has been removed. The organisation has called in external security experts and government agencies to help contain the incident and investigate the breach. Despite the attack, St Vincent’s is still operational and delivering services.
The national cyber security coordinator has confirmed that they are involved in containing the incident and are working with Services Australia, the Department of Health and Aged Care, and relevant state and territory agencies to coordinate the government’s response. The Australian Cyber Security Centre is also working closely with St Vincent’s.
