TLDR:

  • Hackers claim to have stolen data from Santander staff and customers, including 30 million people’s bank account details.
  • The hacking group, ShinyHunters, has also targeted Ticketmaster and a cloud storage company called Snowflake.

All Santander staff and millions of customers have had their data hacked according to a recent report by the British Broadcasting Corporation. The hackers responsible have claimed to have stolen confidential information from Santander, including bank account details of 30 million people. This same group has also targeted Ticketmaster and a cloud storage company called Snowflake.

The bank has acknowledged the breach and is in the process of contacting affected customers and employees directly. While the hackers claim to have accessed sensitive information, Santander maintains that no transactional data or online banking details were contained in the stolen database.

The hacking group, ShinyHunters, has previously sold data stolen from AT&T and is now attempting to sell the information obtained from Santander on a hacking forum. While some experts warn that these claims could be a publicity stunt, cyber-security company Hudson Rock suggests that the Santander breach is connected to an ongoing hack of Snowflake’s systems.

Snowflake has confirmed a “potentially unauthorized access” to a limited number of customer accounts, which was attributed to the misuse of login information from a former employee. The company has stated that the accessed account did not contain sensitive data and there is no evidence of any product breach on their end.
