Authorities in Serbia have not confirmed reports of a ransomware attack on the public energy company EPS. The government and EPS have remained silent on the alleged attack, which has reportedly been ongoing for over a week. The online forum Bezbedni Balkan claimed that EPS was targeted by the hacker group Qilin, who encrypted the company’s data and threatened to release it to the public unless an agreement was reached. EPS acknowledged a “crypto-type” hacker attack on December 19 and said it was working on recovery. This incident highlights the need for improved cybersecurity defenses in the Balkan region, as cybercrime continues to pose a significant threat.
