- India’s state plans to have a dynamic cyber security platform functioning by May 2024, according to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
- The platform will work towards preventing cybercrime, particularly those that target women through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technologies.
During an Assembly session, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) President and MLA Prof Varsha Gaikwad raised concerns about the rising crime rate targeting women using AI and deepfake technologies. These technologies are capable of creating false realities by changing individuals’ appearances and voices in videos making them nearly identical to the original, hence are extremely difficult to decipher.
In response, Fadnavis announced the development of a robust cyber security platform to curb cybercrime. He explained that the platform would integrate banks, NBFCs, and social media sites and would be capable of handling crimes like bank account theft and social media posts that hurt religious sentiments.
Fadnavis further stated that a total of 17 global companies are involved in the project, for which a tender has been initiated. He added that the system is expected to be ready and functioning by April or May 2024.
Emphasizing on the necessity of such security measures, Gaikwad mentioned that these technologies are increasingly being used to manipulate and alter public opinion. With the advancement of technology, crime rates in the segment are also likely to increase. Therefore, strategic plans need to be put in place to tackle the phenomenon effectively, Gaikwad concluded.
